It starts with a passion for caring for others in their time of need. It grows as you attend class, participate in hands-on training and finish all academic requirements. Now, it’s graduation time, and you’re ready to become a professional nurse – but there’s one more hurdle standing in your way…

You’ve got to pass the NCLEX®.

If you’re intimidated or anxious about taking this important exam, these worries can be alleviated when you have the right study partner in your corner – especially if that study partner comes with one of the strongest guarantees in the industry.

Let’s break down what the NCLEX® is, why it’s important, how it’s scored and how you can pass it with flying colors on the first try – or get a return on your investment.

What is the NCLEX® and why do I have to take it?

NCLEX® stands for National Council Licensure Examination, and it’s the test you’re required to pass to become a practical nurse (PN) or registered nurse (RN).

Wondering why it’s required as part of your licensure? Not only does the NCLEX® assess your nursing knowledge, but it also ensures you’re able to meet certain standards for patient safety.

We’re not going to sugarcoat things – this exam is challenging. There are a wide variety of questions – multiple choice, open response, ordered response and hot spot questions – all designed to adjust in the level of difficulty based on whether you answer correctly or if you get the answer wrong.

While most nursing programs will likely walk you through a more detailed explanation of the exam, the main takeaway is passing the NCLEX® requires some serious study time and dedication.

How will I know if I’ve passed the NCLEX®?

Whether you’re taking the PN or RN exam, the NCLEX® exam is graded on a pass-fail system, not scored by the percentage of questions you answer correctly.

Here’s a high-level overview of how it works:

  • If the computer is 95% sure you’ve passed or failed the test, the test will end before your five-hour window has expired.
  • If you use the entire allotted five hours to take the exam, the computer will make a pass or fail final ability estimate if it can assume either of the outcomes with 95% certainty.
  • If time runs out and you have answered the minimum number of required questions, but the computer cannot assess if you’ve passed or failed with 95% certainty, then the final ability estimate for the questions you completed will be computed to determine if you pass or fail.
  • If time runs out, you haven’t answered the minimum number of required questions and the computer cannot assess if you’ve passed or failed with 95% certainty, the result will be a failing exam.

What are the overall pass rates of the NCLEX® in 2022?

According to NCSBN, 63.39% of all RN candidates and 67.46% of all PN candidates received a passing notice on the NCLEX® in 2022.

What if I’m not a strong test taker?

Some people are masters at figuring out testing strategies and selecting correct answers. Others second-guess themselves throughout the exam, becoming increasingly anxious as minutes tick away.

No matter which camp you fall into, when it comes to the NCLEX®, you need a solid study plan. Preparing the right way will help you gain confidence, better understand this unique test format and ease stress.

But what does it take to “prepare the right way?” It means using the available time to study as effectively and efficiently as possible. In fact, NCSBN states that candidates who are successful the first time have taken a review course and studied at least 50-100 hours before taking the exam.

If you’re overwhelmed by the amount of information you need to retain, or if you’re just unsure where and how to start studying, Hurst Review can make sure you are ready to pass the NCLEX®.

How does Hurst Review work?

Unlike other NCLEX® prep providers and tools that shuffle through surface-level exam questions, Hurst Review takes a deeper, three-step approach to our review strategy.

  1. Students review essential “must-know” content and develop clinical judgment skills through interactive learning and practice questions.
  2. As this content is mastered, we incorporate specific NCLEX® testing strategies to apply on the exam.
  3. Finally, students take practice Readiness Exams to ensure they’re ready for the big day.

This unique process allows you to understand the multi-logical thinking strategies and clinical judgment required to answer questions correctly rather than simply promoting rote memorization, which won’t help much come exam day. This is likely why Hurst Review is the only NCLEX® preparation provider to have a first-attempt pass rate of 98%.

With a range of traditional and online learning options, we’ve got the pathway that fits your needs:

  • Live: An engaging three-day classroom review
  • N-Stream: A three-day live-streaming review
  • Now: A 90-day self-paced online review course
  • Now Plus: A 120-day online RN review that includes a guided study plan
  • Pre-NGN® Prep: Additional study options, including interactive video modules, question banks, essential worksheets and content quizzes

Do I need any tools or resources in addition to Hurst Review to pass the NCLEX®?

When you enroll in a Hurst Review program, you won’t need to go anywhere else for flashcards, study guides, question banks or practice exams. Our step-by-step study plan is designed to give you the best results. After you enroll, you’ll receive access to our library of proprietary learning materials and resources, like recorded lectures and our question banks.

While our study materials are top-tier, what really brings the program to life is our staff of qualified instructors – real nurses who are at the peak of their careers.

All Hurst Review instructors are registered nurses with at least five years of clinical or educational nursing experience and undergo a strict selection process. Once hired, they must participate in a structured orientation process and NCLEX® Boot Camp, where they are required to learn all the Hurst scripted lectures before ever entering the classroom. To assure quality consistency, they routinely receive onsite evaluations.

What happens if I don’t pass the NCLEX®?

Our 98% first-attempt pass rate provides us with the confidence that our review program will give you the outcome you deserve. However, we understand that nursing students like you want to know whether the test prep investment will be worthwhile. That’s why our guarantee is dedicated to your success.

If you’ve completed the entire Hurst Review, have taken the NCLEX® for the first time within three months of your graduation from a U.S. or Canadian accredited school of nursing and receive an NCLEX® failure notice, you have two options. You can either receive a full refund or let us help you – free of charge – pass the exam on your second try.

To receive a full refund:

  • Notify Hurst within two weeks of receiving your NCLEX® failure notice
  • Provide a postmarked envelope with the NCLEX® Failure Notice & Candidate Performance Report
  • Return all provided course material, including the student workbook and any printed resource materials from your online account

While this option may sound appealing, don’t forget that a failure notice means you’ll still have to retake the exam to become an RN or PN.

We want to make that second time the last time you’ll have to take the NCLEX®. That’s why we will provide you with, at no additional cost, the Hurst Total Support plan, an intensive remediation course designed to help you pass your second attempt.

With Hurst Total Support, you get:

  • A 60-day subscription to the complete Hurst Online Review materials
  • A step-by-step study plan to guide you through the course, including additional remediation materials in your online account
  • Weekly emails from an experienced nurse educator monitoring your progress

The Hurst Total Support plan will be provided to you at no cost because our goal is to ensure every student who wants to become a nurse can achieve their professional dream.

What about other providers who also offer a money-back guarantee?

Not all guarantees are created equal. To figure out which are worth their weight, make sure to read the fine print.

  • Some offer your money back if you decide in one week that the program isn’t the right fit. Unfortunately, in just a week, you may not know if you will get the results you want or if the program will work for you.
  • Others allow you to repeat the course at no charge if you receive a failure notice, but there’s no money-back option.
  • And while others offer money back, but you are still left needing to study for the test once more if you want to continue your nursing journey.

With Hurst Review, you choose how you want to proceed on your path to success.
